Newcastle Upon Tyne history dates back almost 2000 years having experienced control by the Romans and the Angles amongst others. Gormley stated that the significance of the angel was to highlight that beneath the site of construction coal miners worked for over 200 years and secondly as a symbolic emblem to mark the transition from an industrial age to an information age. Furthermore, Newcastle Central Station was the first covered train station in the world. Queen Victoria opened the station in 1850 as it stands today as one of only six Grade 1 listed railway stations in the UK.
